- Our
passion for building robots first took off a few years ago, when we decided that
we wanted to pursue a creative hobby -- something that allowed us to focus and
utilize our imaginative energies. Halloween was approaching, so we embarked on
our first robot project, building robot costumes for Halloween.
- After much planning, supply hunting,
and hard work, we created our robot costumes, complete with light-up LED eyes.
- The costumes are constructed
from cardboard boxes, dryer duct, silver paint, and duct tape. The dryer duct,
used for the arms, gives the look of a rigid robotic arm. Red LEDs literally light-up
the robot's eyes and give a life-like feel. A small rectangular slot with screen
placed over top serves as the robot's mouth and allows us to see out of the costumes.
- Our twin robot costumes
were a huge hit and we ended up winning first prize at Club Babylon's Halloween
Costume Contest! The robots also seemed to evoke nostalgic emotions. Many people
commented that our costumes reminded them of their childhood or familiar robotic
TV icons.
